Professor Basuthkar Jagadeeshwar Rao, Senior Professor, Chair of Biology, Dean-Faculty, at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, has taken charge as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) on 26th July 2021. Prior to the IISER posting, Prof. BJ Rao was Senior Professor and Chair-Biology for several years at TIFR, Mumbai and successfully headed the programmes of Mechanism of Genome Dynamics and Cellular Adaptations Laboratory at TIFR. His areas of specialization are molecular basis of genome dynamics, computational biology of genomes and protein active sites, cellular physiology and metabolism – fields in which he has made fundamental contributions. Apart from his research in the domain of biology, he is also interested in dissemination of scientific knowledge and outreach activities. He has to his credit 181 publications with 3041 citations.Prof. Rao, born on March 13, 1956, awarded National Science Talent Award (NCERT) with 16th rank in India, 1st in AP (then United AP), graduated with a BSc from Nizam College and an MSc from Osmania University, Hyderabad, winning University Gold Medals in both. He then obtained his PhD from Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore, in the domain of Biochemistry. He then went on to do his postdoctoral work at Yale Medical School, serving as a research scientist for seven years. On his return to India, he worked at TIFR for several years.

He is a Fellow of all the three National Academies in India, and the Sir JC Bose Fellow of the Department of Science & Technology, India. Prof. Rao is a Chief Member and an advisor on various committees. He has won many awards and fellowships. He is the Chief-Editor of Journal of Biosciences, a flagship journal of Indian Academy of Sciences and Springer Nature, combined.

He has worked as a DST-Inspire teacher, articulating the current excitements of basic Biology to undergraduate students across India. He perceives Biology as a complex manifestation of physics-chemistry of a dynamically evolving system and emphasizes the design principles in Biology. He has delivered numerous technical and public lectures for varied audiences. Reaching young minds has been his passion which he is now doing at Agasthya Foundation, Kuppam.

Prof. Arun Agarwal completed his B.Tech (Electrical Engineering, 1979) and PhD (Computer Science, 1989) both from IIT Delhi. He started his career as a Senior Research Assistant in IIT Delhi and then joined University of Hyderabad in 1984, where at present he is a Professor and Ex-Dean of School of Computer and Information Sciences.

Professor Agarwal was a Visiting Scientist at The Robotics Institute, Carnegie-Mellon University, USA and Research Associate at Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He has visited many other Universities and Institutes like: Monash and Melbourne University in Australia; National Center for High Performance Computing, Hsinchu, Taiwan; Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China; San Diego Supercomputing Centre USA; Mahasarakham University and NECTEC, Thailand; KISTI, South Korea; etc.

He is a Fellow of Telangana Akademi of Sciences, Fellow of IETE, Senior Member of IEEE, USA

He was Chairman of IEEE Hyderabad Section for the years 2001 and 2002. He also received the IEEE Region 10 Outstanding Volunteer Award in 2009 in recognition of his dedications and contributions.

He was awarded Outstanding Reviewer Status for Journal of Pattern Recognition, Elsevier, November 2015. He was felicitated by Indian Society for Rough Sets and in association with Manjrasoft and C V R College of Engineering, in recognition of Academic Excellence and promotion of Rough Set Activities 2017.

He has served on the technical program committee of numerous conferences in the area of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence. He was also on the Steering Committee of PRAGMA and International Committee 2004-2015. He is a member of GARUDA project, a Indian national initiative on Grid Computing. He is also a member of DST-LHC Task Force.

His research interests are in Computer Vision, Image Processing, Neural Networks, Grid and Cloud Computing.

He has guided 16 PhD theses and more than 125 post-graduate dissertations and has published more than 130 papers. He has several projects and consultancy in hand with several industry/research laboratories.

Prof. Appa Rao Podile has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) for a period of five years. Prof. Appa Rao is a senior faculty member in the Department of Plant Sciences at UoH and is known for his contributions in the area of plant-microbe interactions in general and plant disease control using modern molecular approaches in particular. He has also been recently recognized as a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences for his research contributions in the area of plant sciences. Prof. Appa Rao was earlier elected as fellow of other prestigious academies including the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi besides several other awards and honours. He has been awarded “Tata Innovation Fellowship” by the Department of Biotechnology and BSR One Time Grant by the University Grants Commission.
Prof. Appa Rao is a member of scientific committees of Department of Science and Technology and Department of Biotechnology of Government of India.
Prof. Appa Rao’s Laboratory at UoH is supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and European Union under Framework Programme 7 and leads a group of 15 research students.
Prof. Appa Rao is a Gold Medalist in MSc. and has a Ph.D. from Sardar Patel University. He is a Post Doctoral Fellow from the Institute of Botany, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan and subsequently was a Visiting Scientist Institute of Molecular Biology, Academia Sinica, Taipei, and Department of Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology, University of Munster, Germany. He has guided more than 17 PhD students.
